How many animals are in the world?

There are currently around 8.7 million species of animals in the world. The number is rapidly increasing as we traverse and study every nook and corner of the earth. Of these, around 1.3 million have been formally identified and cataloged. The remaining 7.4 million animal species are still waiting to be discovered by man.

Animals come in various shapes and sizes, with different characteristics suited to their respective environments. Some live in water, some on land, some in trees, and some underground. They range from the tiniest of insects to the mightiest of mammals. Each animal has a role to play in its ecosystem and is essential for the health of the environment.

Biodiversity is the variety of life on earth. It is also important because it provides stability to ecosystems. If all the animals in an ecosystem are the same, any change or disturbance could cause the whole system to collapse. But because there is such a great diversity of species, any one species can go extinct without causing too much harm to the ecosystem.
